The Lead-Acid Batteries are one of the most recycled consumer product in the world, wherein more than 95 % of all of the lead and plastic from old batteries is recycled. In most of the cases when new batteries are sold, most state ask for the old batteries in return. To make it more convenient old batteries in storage should be returned to the battery retailer for recycling as it is illegal to put old batteries into landfills. Thus, the batteries should only be handled by professional recycling plant.

In the recycling plant, the scraped or dead batteries are broken apart, and the lead, plastic and acid are separated. After this, the lead is melted, poured into ingots and delivered to battery plants to be used in new batteries. Besides, the plastic is chipped, washed and delivered to a plastics plant, which is melted and designed into new battery cases and other parts.

The sulfuric acid is treated in two ways, either these are neutralized, purified, tested and release it as clean water or the other method treats the acid and converts it to sodium sulfate, a product used in fertilizer, dyes and other products. Thus, recycling not only protect the environment and keep it clean and reclaims valuable lead and plastic for manufacturing and saves energy and money on raw material.
